Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 5

by Joan Tower

Stéphane Denève, Conductor

The Trombones of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Timothy Myers, Principal Amanda Stewart, Associate Principal Jonathan Reycraft

Gerard Pagano

As Music Director Stéphane Denève and the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra prepared to kick off the 2020/2021 season with socially distanced concerts in Powell Hall, he and the trombones of the orchestra recorded the opening piece for this uncommon season, Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman No. 5. Tower began her series of Fanfares for the Uncommon Woman in 1987, while she was Composer-in-Residence with the SLSO. The Fifth Fanfare is a rhythmic tour, starting mellow and unrushed, then gaining momentum, breadth, and warmth as it approaches its gleaming summit.
